About Sumpter & Gonzalez
|
We are a group of bright and determined criminal defense attorneys, supported by an equally dedicated staff, who work hard to achieve outstanding results for our clients.
We are exceptionally trained and qualified to handle the toughest cases. Our attorneys have attended some of the best law schools in the country, including Stanford, New York University, and The University of Texas. Two of our three partners are Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Specializations. Our other partner is the recipient of the prestigious Prettyman/Stiller Fellowship at Georgetown Universtiy Law Center, where she received her Masters in the Law in Criminal Trial Advocacy.
We believe in holistic advocacy. When we defend our clients, we delve into not only their cases, but their lives. In almost every case, there's relevant information well beyond the police report. We want to identify information that, when presented to a prosecutor, judge, or jury, will provide excellent case outcomes; and we also want to identify what brought each

client into the criminal justice system so we can address those factors and keep our clients from returning to the criminal justice system. That's why we've got a full-time, Masters-level social worker on staff, and why one of our attorneys is also a Masters-level social worker.
We believe in making the criminal justice system better, not only by the way we represent our clients, but also by changing the laws that affect our clients. That's why two of our partners lobby on behalf of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
We are dedicated to social justice. Our attorneys have a proven public interest track-record. More than half of our lawyers began their legal careers exclusively representing poor people - a former Assistant Federal Public Defender, Assistant State Public Defender, Staff Attorney for the criminal law clinic at Georgetown University Law Center, and Soros Justice Advocacy Fellow at Texas Defender Service. Each of our attorneys represents indigent clients and we continue to accept court-appointed cases because we believe everyone deserves a zealous and highly qualified lawyer, regardless of income.
We are involved in our community. Our attorneys and staff participate in many excellent community-based organizations and programs, inlcuding Communities in Schools, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Janes Due Process, the Seedling Foundation, and Morning Star Rising.
We represent people from all walks of life, because that's where we come from. Our attorneys and staff include a former U.S. Army officer who served in one of the most elite speical operation units in the world; a former social worker serving clients struggling with HIV/AIDS, drug addiction, mental illness, and incarceration, and a former stock-broker, auto mechanic, and portrait artist; as well as a current amatuer photographer and current linebacker for the Austin Gamebreakers. |
